EUROPE FUTURE CENTRE IN JAPAN

Ahead of early parliamentary elections for the Lower House of Japanese parliament, our Dragan Nikolić visited Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima this October to have a broader context and understanding of security situation in East Asia and wider Pacific region in which Japan plays a crucial role. During a multi-day program organized by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he talked with a number of established geopolitical and military experts and visited the base of the Japanese Naval Self-Defense Forces in Kure. The Indo-Pacific security architecture, marked by an informal tripartite alliance of China, Russia and North Korea hides the danger that one of the separate crisis hot-spots from Kamchatka to the South China Sea might grow into a pretext for a global war and cause a massive global economic crisis.

Europe at 80: V-E Day's Legacy and Battle for Democracy Today

4 May 2025|EU

As the European Union marks 80 years since the end of World War II in 2025, the European Democracy Shield (EDS) emerges as a vital initiative to protect democratic institutions from foreign interference and disinformation. Proposed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the EDS targets threats ranging from Kremlin-orchestrated campaigns to the polarizing influence of figures like Donald Trump. Yet, the EU’s focus on Europe Day, May 9, over the symbolic weight of the WWII anniversary reveals a missed opportunity to frame this defense within the historical context of Europe’s hard-won peace.

The end of WWII in 1945 was a triumph of democratic resilience against authoritarianism, a legacy that resonates with today’s challenges. The Kremlin’s tactics—such as the TikTok campaign that boosted far-right candidate Călin Georgescu in Romania’s 2024 election, later annulled for foreign rigging—echo the propaganda wars of the past. Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, with his pro-Kremlin media and “Sovereignty Protection Act,” further amplifies disinformation, undermining democratic trust. Across the Atlantic, Trump’s rhetoric, from dismissing NATO to aligning with illiberal leaders, mirrors Kremlin narratives, like blaming Ukraine for Russia’s invasion. These converging threats, amplified by platforms like X under figures like Elon Musk, demand a robust European response.

The EDS, set for development in 2025, aims to counter these assaults through enhanced disinformation detection, media literacy, and defenses against AI deepfakes, building on the Digital Services Act. A dedicated committee will address legislative gaps, focusing on cyberattacks and hybrid threats. However, the EU’s choice to center its identity on Europe Day—commemorating the 1950 Schuman Declaration—rather than leveraging the 80th anniversary of WWII’s end, sidelines a powerful symbol of unity against tyranny. This anniversary could have galvanized public support for the EDS, framing it as a continuation of the fight for democratic values forged in 1945.

By rooting the EDS in the historical lessons of WWII, the EU could strengthen its narrative, ensuring that the shield not only protects but also inspires a continent shaped by its past.
